The American Heartworm Society has debate the existence and incident of feline heart disease alone with other pet health experts. Cats are infected with the worms when mosquito carrying heartworm larvae chooses the cat for a quick meal. The larvae gladly transfer to the new host and continue to develop as they move through the cat’s body. Three or four months later, the heartworm settles into the blood vessels and arteries of the cat and continues to develop. On average, heartworm larvae grow into sexually mature male and female worms in approximately 8 months in cats.

This varies slightly from canine heartworm disease where the worms become mature and able to breed after only months. Breeding adult worms introduce microfilariae into the host cat’s blood which are picked up by another mosquito bite which will spread the infection to other animals.

Feline heartworm disease is not as well known as the problem of heartworm disease in dogs. This may be due to the attitude of both pet owner and veterinarians that cats were not at risk of heart disease and the problem was confined to a low number of animals. That assumption has been challenged recently as studies indicate there may be many more instances of feline heartworm disease than previously thought.

Cats provide a resistant host for heartworm and some cats seem to have the ability to rid themselves of this infection spontaneously. This may the result of a strong immune response that kills the larvae before it can develop. Heartworms find it harder to thrive in the feline body than in canines. Cats usually have fewer of the parasites and those present are smaller. In cats, the heartworms live for only 2-3 years while in dogs 5-7 years is common.

Consequences even for felines with immature heartworms can be devastating as the infection can result in pulmonary damage as the dying worms can block arteries and cause lung inflammation that resembles allergic reactions or asthma in symptoms. The syndrome is referred to as Heartworm Associated Respiratory Disease. It’s to be expected that outdoor cats are at great risk yet many indoor cats can also be infected. Cats are susceptible at all ages from two month old kittens to senior cats with the average age of diagnosis or death being four years.

Cats are often not routinely tested for heartworm but the testing is becoming more common as part of annual exams. Symptoms of feline heartworm disease can be difficult to spot for the pet owner and can be divided in acute and chronic symptoms.

Acute Symptoms
* Convulsions
* Diarrhea/vomiting
* Blindness
* Collapse
* Temporary loss of consciousness
* Difficulty breathing
* Tachycardia (rapid heartbeat)
* Sudden death

Cats displaying acute symptoms often die before there is time for a diagnosis or treatment as the list above is often a symptom of organ failure.

Chronic symptoms
* Coughing
* Vomiting
* Weight loss
* Lethargy
* Loss of appetite
* Difficult breathing

Diagnosis of heartworm disease in cats can be difficult and negative results on tests are not always accurate. Some tests will only record the presence of adult female worms and not detect immature or male worms.

The risk for cats with heartworm disease is that there is no treatment available that will cure them of the infection. Some cats will recover spontaneously while others will require therapy with prednisone to relieve lung inflammation. In rare cases, surgery to extract heartworms has been successful in cases but is usually reserved for case where the heartworms obstruct blood flow to the heart or liver.

This is because the recommendation of a daily multi simply leads most people to go the drug store and pick-up the cheapest brand they can find. You may be thinking, “Aren’t all multi-vitamins the same since most contain about 100% of the daily value of most nutrients?”

Unfortunately this is not the case. We have all heard the saying, “You are what you eat.” Unfortunately this isn’t the truth with multi-vitamins. A more fitting saying for multi-vitamins is, “You are what you absorb.”

You see, there are three reasons why cheap, drug-store multis are inferior to higher-quality multi-vitamins, and all of them have to do with absorption of nutrients:

1. Compression The typical drug store vitamins are usually made so that you only have to take one pill per day. To fit all of the nutrients into one pill there is some serious and heating and compression that takes place during the manufacturing process. This not only damages some of the fragile vitamins and minerals, but it also creates a pill that is so hard and dense that your body can’t break it down and absorb it.

2. Mineral Forms If you look at the label of a multi-vitamin you will see various nutrients listed. For example, if you look at magnesium you will see that next to the word “magnesium” there are the specific forms of magnesium listed in parentheses. The problem is that not all forms of minerals are absorbed the same. In fact, the commonly used oxide form has the lowest absorption rate! Remember, it doesn’t matter if you are taking 100% of the recommended daily value if you’re only absorbing a fraction of that!

3. Vitamin Overload This is another problem with those one pill multis. Sure, they have 100% of the daily value of some nutrients, but you are getting all of these nutrients at one time! Remember that this is the DAILY value. This means that it should be taken throughout the day, not in one big dose. These big once-a-day mega-doses are ineffective for absorption and keeping nutrient levels high throughout the day.

The Solution

There are many good brands of multi-vitamins available. However, you are not likely to find them in the drug store. Instead, check with your medical practitioner. There are brands which sell their products only through medical professionals and these tend to be of a higher quality. If you can’t obtain one of these brands, simply look for a multi-vitamin that requires you take more than 1 pill per day (usually 4-8 is the norm). This is a good sign that the vitamin is of higher quality.

Most of all, you should feel a big difference within the first week of taking a high-quality multi-vitamin. If you don’t notice an increase in energy and well-being then you made need to switch.

What is a boundary? In a physical sense, it is easy to understand that a boundary marks off where your property starts and where the neighbour’s ends. You are responsible for your property but not for anything that happens on your neighbour’s.

While not as easy to mark off, our emotional boundaries also mark off where our responsibilities start and end. Too many people feel out of control of their lives because they don’t have good emotional boundaries.

Boundaries are like fences in that they keep bad things out and good things in. This means that you protect yourself from things or people that might hurt you and you nurture things or people that help you. Notice I said fences and not walls. A wall means that nothing gets through from either side whereas a fence allows flow.

Boundaries are limits or barriers that protect you, your time and your energy. When your boundaries are well-defined, they help to prevent conflict within your relationships. They are like your personal rules or policies. Laura Stack says it beautifully, “setting limits is a way of defining who you are and what you’re all about, what you will do and what you won’t; what’s acceptable to you and what’s not”.

Setting boundaries means owning and taking responsibility for your personal choices and the consequences thereof. You make the choice, you take responsibility and you can make a different choice if you don’t like the consequence. You can’t control other people’s behaviour but you can control the extent to which it affects you. In other words, control your exposure to people.

For example, I don’t allow people to make racist remarks around me. Now I can’t control what they will say but I can control whether I continue to listen. Another example is I don’t allow anybody to speak to me in an abusive manner. Again, I can’t control what they say but I will warn them before putting the phone down. It’s their right to say what they want but it’s also my right to not sit there and be a doormat.
